After several years of prodding, Clive Mundle took a leap of faith and decided to enter into representational politics. The former councillor Caleb Lewinson died which paved the way for a new councillor to represent the Frankfield Division. A by-election was held and Mundle was successful, winning the seat by over 900 votes. He was then sworn in as the people’s representative and served in the Clarendon Parish Council as the councillor for the Frankfield Division from 2010- 2011.
He lost the seat in the 2012 Local Government Election by 16 votes but remained the caretaker until he was re-elected on a Jamaica Labour Party ticket in 2016 by a convincing 700 votes. He again won the seat for the Jamaica Labour Party in the 2024 Local Government Elections by a 512 margin. He said politics was the furthest thing from his mind, as that wasn’t something he had ever considered. Instead, he was more concerned with travelling overseas and would assist community members in any way he could on each time he visited Jamaica.
Mundle stated that one must have a humanitarian side to them and have an unwavering willingness to help people. He said the perception people have is that politicians are expected to do everything. “They think you have a lot of money that you can use to do everything but it’s not like that. If you don’t love people and have a passion for service then it doesn’t make sense you enter into politics. It’s a little bit better now because of the salary increase but the demand is still there and there is a lot of people you have to do out of your salary” he explained.
Councillor Mundle advised that there is a lot of information on politics and politicians so the public can access whatever information they need. He said, “it is not all bad.”
He added that if a person wants to serve this is one of the mediums they can use to serve their community he said adding that the Frankfield division has just over 7,000 persons on the voters list. “I am a JLP councillor but once I am elected I represent everybody, I don’t stigmatize, I help everybody and if I can’t help you, I don’t ask you who you are and what side you represent and that is what is important. I truly believe that once you are elected, you are supposed to represent everybody.”
Councillor Mundle explained that his dream is to build and furnish a skills training center for the residents of the Frankfield Division and surrounding areas. “There are a lot of young people who after they graduate are just on the street. Some of them cannot afford to attend college and others may not have the required subjects to matriculate to higher learning, so, I would really love get a skills training center in Frankfield to leave as my legacy project” he said adding that plans are in the early stages to see this dream become a reality. Several meetings with stakeholders have already taken place and so we are looking to continue the work and build partnerships.
